Intersession Information

  • An alternative intersession is not meant to replace an intersession because you don’t like which activity you are in or because you’re not friends with whoever is in that activity; instead, alternative intersessions provide opportunities for individual experiences based on personalized needs.

  • Remember that intersessions have learning components to them.  It’s never a simple hike in the woods; rather, it is an opportunity to learn about ecology, trail safety and maintenance, personal reflections, career opportunities and more.

    • Pay close attention to the educational outcomes.

    • Utilize the BHS Expectations for Student Learning and the Four C’s to help develop learning objectives.

  • Proposals need to contain specifics.  For example, if you plan to interview someone, who will you be interviewing.  If you plan to job shadow, where will you job shadow?  Most proposals that are sent back to students for revisions are sent back because they are too vague without these important details.

  • Collaborative alternative intersessions may be allowed; however, you need to remember that the work and experience should be equivalent to six hours per day per person.  Make sure you delineate what will be done by each person.

  • Applying for an alternative intersession doesn’t guarantee it’s approval. A faculty committee reviews each application and may deny or require changes to the proposal.

    • Be aware of the deadline.  Don’t wait until the last minute to submit your proposal as changes to the proposal may be required.

  • Having an approved proposal does not guarantee Successful Participation.  The student must follow through and submit acceptable and high quality artifacts and reflection in a timely manner.

  • Assessment will be recorded on student transcripts in the same manner as intersession:

    • SP: Successful participation

    • NP: Non participation
